Lasers can be used to treat many problem areas, including wrinkled skin, unwanted hair, unsightly scars and embarrassing lesions. The staff at Island Plastic Surgery in New York relies on laser treatments to help many of the patients who come into our Mineola and West Islip sites. Our services include intense pulsed light (IPL), photofacials and spider vein therapy. We have found laser procedures to offer an effective, yet minimally invasive solution to various patient concerns.

What is Intense Pulsed Light?
Laser therapy with intense pulsed light (IPL) is a safe, minimally invasive and relatively painless way to eliminate certain skin conditions. Using high energy beams of light that can selectively transfer energy into skin tissue, our skilled professionals offer permanent hair removal, as well as elimination of rosacea, scars, age spots, freckles, birthmarks and pigmented lesions.
What are Photofacial Treatments?
Photofacial treatment is a series of full-face, gentle pulsed-light treatments intended to create younger-looking skin. The procedure improves the appearance of sun-damaged and aged skin and can also reduce facial and neck redness and flushing.
Photofacials use a series of gentle pulses to emit intense light over the entire face. There are usually five treatments spread out at intervals of approximately three weeks. A photofacial is different than laser treatments because it emits light over many wavelengths. This allows penetration to all the levels of the skin where abnormal, easily dilated vessels can be found. Because lasers produce only a single wavelength of light, they are limited in depth and what they can treat. Photofacial treatments were developed to consistently and predictably improve the visible appearance of the skin with little or no down time.
What is Spider Vein Therapy?
We are happy to announce the opening of Island Vein Specialists, offering the latest treatments for spider and varicose veins. You can find us at www.IslandVeinSpecialists.com. Our services include the treatment of spider veins in the face and in the legs.
During spider vein therapy, the laser is applied to the skin over your spider veins, causing them to coagulate and shrink. With facial spider vein therapy, laser treatment may cause minor bruising, which usually improves within a week. Often, however, recovery is immediate. Laser therapy is most effective for small- and medium-sized spider veins.
Both face and leg treatments are associated with mild discomfort, not unlike a small rubber band snapping against skin. You usually do not require sedatives, pain medications or injections of local anesthetic during the procedure.
Immediately following treatment, your spider veins will be darker and more visible. But for the next two to six weeks, they usually fade. After each procedure, you will see a 70 percent to 80 percent improvement in the appearance of face spider veins and a 30 to 40 percent improvement in leg spider veins. An average of three treatments will be required at three-month intervals.
