We offer breast reconstruction for women who have lost all or part of their breast as a result of cancer, congenital abnormalities, trauma, infection or disease. It is performed to reshape and enhance appearance and help improve the patient’s self-esteem.
Breast reconstruction, performed to replace tissue lost during a mastectomy (removal of a breast), or lumpectomy (removal of part of the breast) restores breast shape. The aim is to match the remaining natural breast as closely as possible either by placing an implant, by using tissue from another part of the body or a combination of the two techniques. Commonly, surgery is performed on the unaffected breast allowing maximum symmetry. Our doctors will discuss the reconstructive options most suitable for you. These vary based on the amount of tissue removed from your breast, the healthiness of the tissue at the planned operation site, whether or not you have undergone radiation to your breast, your general health and build and most importantly, your choice and preference.
New medical techniques and devices have made it possible for surgeons to create a breast that can come close, in form and appearance, to matching a natural breast. Frequently, reconstruction is possible immediately following breast removal, so the patient awakens from surgery with a breast mound already in place, without the trauma of seeing herself with no breast at all.
Once the reconstructed breast settles into its final shape, the nipple-areola complex is reconstructed as a separate operation. Although an important step in the final appearance of the breast, it is performed at the patient’s discretion.
