Island Plastic Surgery Answers Your Liposuction Questions
Most of us have heard of liposuction in some regard. However, because we hear liposuction mentioned so much, we often come away with misconceptions. Although we’re familiar with the procedure, we don’t really know what it entails. Island Plastic Surgery is here to clear up any misinformation on this popular body procedure. We’re Long Island, NY’s trusted provider of all things cosmetic surgery, including liposuction for various parts of the body. If you’ve been considering liposuction but need more details, we’re the team to call. Ask us your question or browse or FAQ for some of our most requested responses.
What Is Liposuction?
In general, liposuction is a body procedure used to remove excess fat. It’s best utilized for areas of the body where diet and exercise have not been successful at eliminating fat deposits. This surgical procedure involves an incision into the skin to take out the fat layer just below the skin.
What Areas Can Liposuction Improve?
Liposuction is useful for numerous parts of the body. You’ll see the best results for areas where fat builds up despite a healthy diet and regular exercise. Most patients look to liposuction for removing fat in the chin, back, neck, upper arms, breasts, thighs, and abdomen, among others. This is not an exhaustive list of the uses of liposuction, so be sure to talk to Island Plastic Surgery’s Dr. Pamela Gallagher about whether liposuction can help you.
Is Liposuction Useful for Any Amount of Fat?
Unfortunately, liposuction isn’t as effective as a weight-loss method. You won’t be able to remove large amounts of fat with this procedure. In most cases, Dr. Gallagher can help you lose up to 10 pounds with liposuction, but it shouldn’t be a replacement for healthy eating and routine exercise. Liposuction is also ineffective at eliminating cellulite. If you’re looking to remove cellulite, the Cellfina™ System may be a better alternative.
Is Liposuction Right for Me?
Some patients will benefit more from this body procedure than others, so it’s important to decide if liposuction is right for you. Good candidates for liposuction are in good general health and refrain from smoking. Liposuction might be right for you if you’re almost to your ideal weight, but just have a few stubborn “problem areas.” Dr. Gallagher will also evaluate your skin for an adequate amount of elasticity.
How Can I Prepare for Liposuction?
Dr. Gallagher will provide you with personalized instruction before your surgery. Some general guidelines might include discontinuing blood-thinning medications like aspirin. We might also recommend blood tests to ensure anesthesia is safe for you. You’ll want to stay away from eating and drinking about 12 hours before your appointment as well. Finally, be sure to ask a friend or family member to drive you to and from Island Plastic Surgery on the day of the operation.
Is the Liposuction Procedure Fast?
If you’re in a time crunch and need a faster alternative to traditional liposuction, we also offer Lunchtime Lipo. This innovative body procedure can be completed in about one hour, and you’ll start seeing improvement within the next few days. You can return to your daily activities right away, and total recovery only takes a few weeks.
What’s the Best Way to Recover from the Procedure?
You’ll need to be prepared for the recovery process, no matter which of our body procedures you’re interested in. For liposuction, complete recovery usually takes two to four weeks. After this period, most patients can return to their normal activities and exercise regimens. During this recovery period, it’s best to stay hydrated and avoid smoking to promote optimal healing. Most patients have some side effects such as swelling and bruising, but any pain can be taken care of with medication. You may also be given compression garments to wear on the treated areas. Be sure to adhere to any other instructions given by the team at Island Plastic Surgery.
Are There Any Risks Associated with Liposuction?
Because liposuction is a complex surgical procedure, there is a certain amount of risk associated with the operation. Patients should be aware of potential bleeding, fat clots, pain, and swelling. Some complications can become more severe, such as damage to nerves, scarring, and the need for further operation. However, know that the team at Island Plastic Surgery is highly qualified and understands how to alleviate many of these risks. If you notice chest pain, difficulty breathing, or excessive bleeding after liposuction, reach out to us immediately.
