What is Breast Augmentation?
Sometimes referred to as a “boob job,” breast augmentation
surgery is a procedure that uses breast implants or fat transfers to increase
or improve the shape and size of your breasts. This outpatient procedure
can restore breast volume, improve natural breast asymmetry, and produce
a more rounded breast shape.
Things to Consider Before Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a personal choice, but if it something you have
been considering for some time, then Island Plastic Surgery is here to
help! There is no one-size-fits-all solution, so working with a surgeon
who takes your goals to heart, is a key element. It is also very important
that you are doing the procedure for yourself and not for someone else.
You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery if:
- You are physically healthy
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are a nonsmoker
- Your breasts are fully developed
- Your breasts are asymmetrical or failed to develop normally
- Your breasts have lost their shape and volume due to pregnancy, weight
loss, or aging - You have realistic expectations
The Procedure
Before surgery begins, you will be given medication to ensure your comfort.
Incisions will be made in inconspicuous areas to minimize scarring. You
and your surgeon will discuss which type of incision works best for your
desired outcome. The three main types of incisions include under the breast
(infra-mammary), under the arm (transaxillary), and around the nipple
(peri-areolar). Once the incision is made, the breast implant or fat transfer
will be inserted into a pocket either under the pectoral muscle or directly
behind the breast tissue. The incisions will be sutured and then your
breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings and secured with a support
bra to ensure proper healing. The procedure usually takes 1-2 hours.
Recovering from Surgery
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, so you will likely be discharged
an hour or so after the surgery is complete. Before leaving, the doctors
at Island Plastic Surgery will give you specific instructions for at-home
care based on your personal needs. Pain is minimal, so you can usually
return to your normal routine after a few days, but keep excessive lifting
to a minimum.
