Liposuction
Liposuction on Long Island
Liposuction (lipoplasty) is a surgical procedure that eliminates excess fat from under the skin. Where diet and exercise can only shrink fat cells, liposuction actually removes them. During a liposuction procedure, a plastic surgeon inserts a small, hollow tube into the area of concern, targeting unwanted fat between the skin and muscle tissue. Excess fat cells are then suctioned out, leaving behind a slimmer, more contoured shape. As one of the most popular cosmetic procedures among men and women for contouring the body, liposuction can produce immediate results that will remain permanent as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Areas Commonly Treated
Liposuction can be performed on many areas of the body, helping create a slimmer physique. We regularly perform liposuction in the cheeks, chin, neck, upper arms, chest, abdomen, waist, back, hips, buttocks, thighs, inner knee, calves, and ankles. Liposuction can be performed in most areas with excessive fat between the skin and muscle tissue. However, there are some areas and situations that may not be suitable. At our facility, you will meet with a doctor ahead of time and discuss the appropriateness of liposuction in the desired area.
What to Expect
Most liposuction procedures take 1-3 hours, depending on the size of the treatment area. Pain is usually mild to moderate. You will need to wear a compression garment for 2 to 4 weeks after surgery to help support and “shrink” the skin and to ensure proper healing. Swelling is common during the first 48 hours following surgery, and bruising typically disappears within several weeks. You may experience slight discomfort for a few days after surgery, but you should be able to return to your normal activities within a few days. Liposuction is neither a treatment for obesity or cellulite nor a substitute for proper diet and exercise. If you have a notable weight issue, you will need to address that first before considering the procedure.
