What Is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction restores the shape size, symmetry, and appearance of one or both breasts for women who have undergone breast cancer treatments, the most common of which is a partial or simple mastectomy. Breast reconstruction often involves many procedures performed in multiple stages, and can either be done at the time of the mastectomy or at a later date.
There are three main categories of reconstructive breast surgery: implant reconstruction, flap reconstruction, and lumpectomy reconstruction.
Implant Reconstruction
Implant breast reconstruction is similar to a breast augmentation procedure, using silicone or saline-filled implants to help form a new breast mound. The simplest form of implant reconstruction is the direct-to-implant procedure. This one-step process places the implant directly following a mastectomy, greatly diminishing operation costs, recovery time, and emotional trauma.
The tissue-expander procedure is another form of implant reconstruction. This multistage process gradually expands the remaining breast tissue to create a natural pocket for the implant. A tissue expander will be placed inside the chest wall and filled partly with saline. More and more fluid will be inserted at regular intervals to expand the pocket. Once the expansion is complete, the implant will be placed in a simple outpatient procedure. The entire process usually takes 4-6 months.
Flap Reconstruction
Flap or autologous, reconstruction uses skin and muscles taken from another part of your body (usually the abdomen or back) to form a new breast mound. This natural breast reconstruction utilizes microsurgery to transplant tissue into a new location, reconnecting blood vessels under a microscope to blood vessels in the chest. The skin flap is then fashioned into the shape of a breast. The best part about flap reconstruction is that the resulting breast looks and feels natural.
Lumpectomy Reconstruction
If you have had a large lumpectomy that has significantly altered one or both of your breasts, then our cosmetic surgeon can perform a lumpectomy reconstruction, a procedure much like a breast reduction or breast lift. After the malignancy has been removed, the breast is reshaped and the nipple aligned. The surgeon will then remove a similar amount of tissue from the other breast to maintain symmetry.
