What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

A breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a form of plastic surgery that removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve your ideal breast size. Breast reductions are performed after the breasts are fully developed and usually take only 1-2 hours to complete.

Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

Women with large breasts often experience a variety of medical problems and self-image issues, but breast reduction surgery can actually help increase their quality of life by:

  • Alleviating pain in the back, shoulders, neck, and joints
  • Relieving stress on your joints and decreasing your risk for arthritis
  • Reducing skin irritation, abrasions, and rashes caused by bra straps digging into your shoulders
  • Improving posture
  • Enhancing body image
  • Decreasing the risk for respiratory complications
  • Allowing for a more active lifestyle

The Procedure

Before beginning the procedure, the surgeon will administer general anesthesia to ensure maximum comfort. Incisions are made in inconspicuous locations such as around the nipple, under the breast, and along the infra-mammary crease. The number of incisions depends on the extent of the procedure. Then, the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed. A breast lift can also be done at this time if you so desire, which involves shifting the nipple and areola to a higher position. Otherwise, the nipple and areola are placed back into the normal position. The surgeon will close the incisions and apply compression bandages to complete the procedure.

Recovery

Following breast reduction surgery, your breasts will be covered with gauze and supported with a surgical support bra. Small tubes may be placed at the incision sites to drain excess blood or fluid, but those will be removed after 1-2 days. Your breasts will be swollen and bruised for about 2 weeks, so you can take pain medications and apply cold compresses to help minimize discomfort. Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for several weeks. You should be able to resume normal physical activity in 4-6 weeks after surgery.
